    I have been using a visual timer with my AuDHD son and it has helped so much! He works best unsupervised, I set him up with the timer and make sure he knows what the task is and move to another room, we are homeschooling at the moment. He calls me when he is done.

    I remember growing up when I was in 2nd grade, my teacher was reading a picture book. She started talking to the class and I started reading out loud while she was talking to the class. I got in trouble for that at home. I had a hard time paying attention. This was back in the early 90’s. I asked my mom if she ever paid attention to my behavior. She said no. My mom doesn’t believe in all this stuff. I discovered as an adult that she didn’t care either. All she knew was that I was getting the bare minimum so she wouldn’t get in trouble by CPS. Weird thing is she retired from being a CPS social worker who was given powers to remove abused and neglected kids. So weird. That’s why I never had a 504 plan. Yes I am very angry with her.

    A label in my opinion never defines a person well. In fact I was mislabeled growing up and as a student I believe it's extremely important to realize different levels like diploma or degree or certificates are still a form of education and deserve to be heard...if not seen.

    I knew a dad who lowered his voice the more upset he got. It got his sons attention in a big way because he knew if he was straining to hear dad he was in big trouble! I like the way the video reminds us how we would feel as adults if someone walked in our room and told us to do this or that. There’s nothing wrong with asking our kids to do something and explaining why- how else will they learn? It doesn’t mean we’re not in control. As a manager I always asked my employees to do things, they understood it had to be done even though I was “asking”, asking your kids to do something teaches them respect because you are showing respect. Staying calm, not swearing at your kids, asking all these things paint the picture of someone who is in charge and the kids recognize that.

    First of all, I think I may have just developed ADHD by listening to this incredibly monotonous (bored??) voice - I literally just fidgeted in my seat, rolled my eyes and resisted lots of urges to stand up and walk around (and throw a book). The strategies themselves were actually extremely useful, and I will def. tweak them to match the needs of my highschool students. The only thing I disagree with is the class reward for good behavior: I view this as collective punishment when the class does not do well - it's usually down to one or two students and then the whole class suffers. This can really kill motivation and nurture a lot of resentment amongst peers, so I would rethink that one.

    With all due respect, I have ADHD and want to get what she is saying but THIS is what causes “behaviors” in class. I WANT to learn but there is ZERO dopamine happening from being read at with lots of words in slides. Good points but difficult presentation to follow for anyone who has ADHD.

    Strict parenting with an obsession of asserting power yet being highly hypocritical is the problem. If you want to act like a leader and set a rule for a kid with this? Follow it yourself or be ready to fight with them and you don't get to tell them they're the bad guy for it because they're the ones being punished for actions you do. Kids need solid role models. And when you can't live up to the expectations of perfection you press on them (as they would perceive it anyways) there lies the true issue. -an ex foster kid with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

    These tips sound great but when your odd kid isn’t a rational at all nor logical these tips don’t work. We’ve tried all of them. He’s twelve now and getting much worse. More frequent and violent outbursts at home and school. Also he won’t listen to anything. No matter how we phrase things. He doesn’t keep any schedule such as getting ready for bed. He argues and fights about everything. No matter what. Furthermore he’s harmful to animals. Is almost as if he can’t learn anything. Trying anything new and he freaks out and throws a fit like a toddler. Tying shoes, he gets frustrated and throws things. SO frustrated!

    • @svetavinogradova4243
      @svetavinogradova4243 2 роки тому

      You failed him. Now it is almost too late to correct YOUR failure. But if you want to try and give him a chance, there is a sequence you need to follow: 1) you admit that ODD is the result of poor parenting 2) you admit that a child always behaves in a way that a parent allowed him, too. 3) have you got a man in the family??? If not, well, this is doomed a bit. If yes, let this man drive the little brat to a forest, go walk deep into the forest with him, then hold, take a stick and teach him discipline old way soo much that the little brat would be afraid of uttering a word. No witnesses. 4) at home all food is removed, only stale reduced bread is left, and some cheapest milk and the cheapest apples. You all , except your kid, eat out. He does not. He gets the minimum - bread and milk and apples - the minimum your parental duty requires. 5) All gadgets get broken/removed/sold on ebay. NO internet access fdor him. 6) You leave him with 2 changes of clothes and make him wash it himself. The man in the family will superwise, and drag to the washing machine if needed. 7) At night you come and pour cold water onto him just like that. The goal - make him scared, submissive, take the power away, you must break him and make him scared NOW, not when he is 14-15 and will got shooting schools.

I know this is for parents and teachers to help their kids but adults with ADHD who have been recently diagnosed are still trying to figure out how to help themselves. Having blocks of repetitive text isn't good for the inability to focus. I would highly recommend you take the style or at least a note from How To ADHD. I find it easier to follow her guidance.
